Crafting a post card worthy custom motocross track in southeastern Idaho

Located in the southeastern part of Idaho, Soda Springs (Caribou County) is known for hundreds of carbonated water natural springs that can be found throughout the city. The main attraction is the Soda Spring Geyser, which erupts every hour. Soda Springs can also lay claim to having one of the most picturesque private motocross tracks in the country, thanks to MX Track Builders.

If you are familiar with Fox Racing’s old “Dream On” advertisements, which showcased beautiful tracks and captivated every die-hard rider, Soda Springs Motocross is worthy of such a distinction. Situated on ten acres, the track incorporates the hilly natural terrain to add excitement and character for a one-of-a-kind riding experience. Soda Springs Motocross was a labor of love. The finished product has a variety of tabletops, off-camber corners, sweepers and forgiving double jumps.

Before breaking ground, MX Track Builders conducted a site assessment. This consisted of an on-site evaluation of the topography, soil composition, and drainage potential. Test pits were then excavated to analyze soil type and subsurface conditions. An action plan was created and outlined for the customer, which received the green light to proceed. The team was ready to craft the customized track, but not before marking the layout and putting special focus on utilizing the natural features of the land.

From there, the top foot of dark loamy topsoil was stripped from the site. The track was formed with underlying soils, which consisted of silt, clay, and rock. To prevent flooding and erosion MX Track Builders installed 400 linear feet of drainpipe and placed riprap at the pipe ends. A haul truck was instrumental for placing the topsoil on top of the track to create the ideal riding surface. As for the rocks, which are prevalent in that part of the country, the crew employed a soil conditioner to extract rock from the track’s surface. Then came the finishing touches: compacting the track profile and installing track markers. It took ten days for three operators with two bulldozers, an excavator, and a haul truck to make the customer’s dream motocross track become reality.
