The perfect blend of motocross, supercross and arenacross in the desert

Located on the western flank of the Sacramento Mountains in the Tularosa Basin, Alamogordo rests between the New Mexico towns of Las Cruces and Roswell. The 19.3 square mile town of Alamogordo is in the northernmost part of the Chihuahuan Desert, where the climate is arid and water is precious (there’s less than 12 inches of rainfall each year, on average). While the dry New Mexico soil presents a challenge, Otero County is an area the MX Track Builders team is very familiar with. Six months earlier we spent five days building a track up the road in La Luz (click here to read the article).

The customer, a brother-in-law of the La Luz track owner, has two boys who race competitively in the mini ranks. The family often ventures around the country in their Class A coach bus to compete at many of the high-profile amateur national events. While at home in Alamogordo, the sons need a place to practice and hone their skills. That’s where the MX Track Builders crew came into the picture.

Our first step was to level the pre-existing track and start with a clean slate. Water trucks were utilized to process moisture into the soil for dust suppression and compaction. Without water trucks, our earthmovers would not have been successful at packing the dry soil into terrain features capable of handling long-term use. We completely redesigned the track, focusing on water run-off (a problem the customer had with his previous track design). We also maintained the land’s natural vegetation.

The hybrid motocross/supercross/arenacross-style track sits on 1.5 acres behind the customer’s house. There’s a big finish line double, triple, bowl turns, rhythm lane, starting area and more. We can’t forget to mention the awesome two-story clubhouse overlooking the track. With a wrap-around observation deck, air conditioning, 70-inch television and a dog house below, the Alamogordo setup is every motocross rider’s dream.

Several years down the road we won’t be surprised to hear about several top-caliber professional motocross riders coming out of southern New Mexico. With two uniquely different and fully customized tracks shared between two families to ride and train on, the Alamogordo/La Luz crew have the tools necessary to go far in this sport. We are happy just to be a small part in helping them to reach their motocross goals.
